The Minister of Education, Culture and Science, Robbert Dijkgraaf, today presented the prizes for higher education at the annual ComeniusFestival in Nieuwegein. The prizes were awarded for the second time to innovative projects in higher vocational education and university education. The 1ste the award of the Dutch Higher Education Premium for teams of universities of applied sciences went to pulsed from Fontys Hogeschool, among the university teams this one went on Shaping responsible futures from the University of Twente TU.

The Comenius Festival celebrates the importance of educational innovation for higher education. By awarding the prize to six different teaching teams instead of choosing 1 winner or letting the individual teachers win, the Minister wants to value and encourage collaboration and innovations in the field of education. Teams can use the amount won to make a special contribution to the renewal and / or improvement of higher education with an extraordinary project. The winning teams will receive € 1.2 million for 1e price, € 800,000 for 2e price or € 500,000 for the 3e price.

Minister Dijkgraaf: ‘We need to give teachers and teaching staff plenty of room to innovate. To challenge, connect and offer tailor-made solutions to students in new ways. It is amazing that with this award we honor top professionals in education and help them take their beautiful projects further. And I hope that these projects can and will be rolled out more widely, which will benefit us all. ‘

First prize

The master effort Designing a responsible future from the University of Twente TU let students from different educations collaborate on societal challenges in an interdisciplinary wayThe jury found it strong that students work on a challenge-based basis in an interdisciplinary context within the DesignLab environment and was impressed with the interdisciplinary aspect of the master’s effort. Involving students from different backgrounds, such as philosophy or technical studies, gives students a completely different view of the tasks that stakeholders present.

pulsed van Fontys Hogeschool is formed by an enthusiastic team that develops educational profiles, educational programs and didactic approaches, with the aim of training (young) people to become ‘self-directed professionals’. The jury was very impressed with the number of projects developed and realized by this team. The jury in particular was very enthusiastic about the innovative initiative Authorize, where students who drop out in the first and second years work on their personal and professional development process. The diverse initiatives are of great importance to students and teachers, as the team has already reached out with more than 2000 teachers and 1000 students.

Other winning teams

The second and third prizes for the professional college teams go to the NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences, respectively. Including Community Lab and Codarts Rotterdam, University of the Arts, Codarts Student Life program. Award for innovative education

The Dutch Higher Education Premium was established as a recognition for innovation in education at universities and colleges and is also thought of as an important sign of appreciation by educational teams that deliver top performance. It is also an incentive for teachers to continue working on educational innovation and knowledge sharing. The award-winning teams become members of the Comenius Network to share and use knowledge from educational innovation more widely.

From next year, Minister Dijkgraaf also wants to award the prize to educational teams within MBO, where a lot of beautiful and promising things are also happening within innovation, renewal and cooperation with society.
