There is still room for maneuver in the Dutch business community, although it differs greatly from sector to sector. According to new figures from the Chamber of Commerce (KvK), the Netherlands now has more than 2.2 million companies, a growth of almost 5.5 percent compared to a year ago. Entrepreneurs who start something new do so primarily in food, culture, sports or recreation. The Chamber of Commerce registered a quarter more start-up entrepreneurs in these sectors than in the same month last year.

According to Jos Klerx, sector specialist in the hotel and recreation sector at Rabobank, many self-employed people in particular are embarking on a new adventure: “Now that everything is allowed again, these sectors attract again. We see that the turnover here and there is already higher than in 2019, ie for corona. In particular, there is more trust among employees. They see opportunities again. There is also a lot of work to do. ”

New opportunities for actors

Due to the huge shortage of staff in almost all sectors, it is advantageous to work as a self-employed entrepreneur without staff (zzp), Klerx believes. “As a self-employed person, you can now easily contact multiple employers.” In the cultural sector, for example, there is a need for technicians for sound and light, and there are also new opportunities for actors.

Now that the gyms are once again running at full capacity, there is again room for personal trainers in that industry. Because many Dutch people ‘discovered’ their own country as a holiday destination in the corona era, the recreation sector has been at the top for a long time.

Now that corona measures have been abolished, many consumers tend to ‘make up for the damage’ after various lockdowns. They often go out for dinner or have a drink on a terrace. An ideal time to start a catering business, as the Chamber of Commerce looks at the registrations. In April, the Netherlands had 935 entrepreneurs opening a restaurant, lunch room, hotel or café.

Event catering companies

Klerx can not recognize itself in the image that there is more catering, at least not when it comes to physical locations: “There are more registrations from the self-employed than locations that open.” The type of catering industry added according to the Chamber of Commerce seems to confirm Klerx’s observation. In particular, there have been many so-called event caterers. This group includes, for example, self-employed chefs and baristas.

In culture, sports and recreation, more than a thousand start-up entrepreneurs, primarily in the arts, were involved. No less than 80 percent started a business in the cultural corner. At any rate, the common thread in the sectors that are reviving is the consumer’s thought: hurray, we can go again.

At the same time, the extinguishing of the pandemic has put an end to emergency aid from the government. As a result, there are more people in the Netherlands quitting their business, and fewer entrepreneurs starting a new business than around this time last year. In April, 20,000 new companies were registered with the Chamber of Commerce in the Netherlands, 3 percent less than a year ago.

War and inflation

The number of companies that ceased operations increased to 12,000. That is a quarter more than in April 2021. According to the Chamber of Commerce, however, there were fewer bankruptcies (94), the lowest monthly figure since January 2020. The Chamber of Commerce says that they receive more calls from entrepreneurs with questions about. the consequences of a possible bankruptcy.

That sectors such as the catering industry and recreation are now climbing out of the valley after a deep crisis is certainly no guarantee of a carefree future, emphasizes sector specialist Jos Klerx. “Consumer confidence is historically low, partly due to the war in Ukraine and inflation. You therefore do not know what the effect will be in the long run. The war and the price increases can have a significant impact on disposable income, and things can be very different in the future. ”
