Some people may have to dig deep: how do I know that name from, Job, Joris & Marieke? And of course, there are those who have never heard of them, and others who immediately know who we are writing about here. Job, Joris & Marieke is an Oscar-nominated Dutch animation studio, which was founded by Job Roggeveen, Joris Oprins and Marieke Blaauw. In 2015, the film A Single Life was nominated for the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film. Their short film, A Double Life, premiered in 2018, which was nominated for a Golden Calf at the Dutch Film Festival. In 2018, they won an international Emmy (TV World Oscar) with the short film Kop Op – which they made before working on the series; more on that later.
And there are many, many more achievements in their name. In addition, an exhibition about Holland’s most famous talents in animation has never been realized and Kunsthal Rotterdam has changed that. For the spring, this museum presents’ Job, Joris & Marieke. A triple life ‘. And why is this story in De IJsselbode? Not only because a visit to the Kunsthal is worth the effort, but also because Marieke was (almost) born and raised in Oudewater and many (former) Oudewater people will definitely know her. Marieke’s father is without a doubt known by many from the Stichting Geveltekens Oudewater; so also something with design.
Marieke Blaauw grew up on Oude Hekendorperweg and went to school on Klavertje 4, which had only recently been established, which at the time was still housed where Futura can now be found. Later she went as a large part of the Oudewaterse youth at Minkema College in Woerden. Marieke enjoyed herself in Oudewater, she says, for example, in Jupiter, the volleyball club, and she clearly remembers that she liked going to the market and buying cheese from Jongerius. But then she flew, like so many others, out and studied at Design Academy Eindhoven. There she met Job and Joris, with whom she would later set up an animation studio: “During our studies we wanted to tell stories, but it turned out to be quite difficult if you were on a design course (Design Academy Eindhoven is a high school, specializing in design). The academy offers education in industrial design, ed.). That’s why I started working with Joris at the Pedri animation studio, where we worked on the stop-motion series Miffy. ” In 2007, they started their own studio with Job, simply called Job, Joris & Marieke, where they make video clips and short animated films. Marieke: “With an animation you can tell stories and design everything; all the way down to the main character. And we think that’s great. If you want to see some of their work, you can visit their own website: www.jobjorisenmarieke.nl. Anyone looking for the animation studio via Wikipedia will no doubt be particularly surprised by the nominations and awards they have won.

But there is more and especially in this period. Marieke explains: “In the coming Sunday mornings, episodes of ‘Kop op’ will be broadcast on television; Although it is a youth series, it is certainly also very nice for parents (and other adults) to watch. ” And definitely worth a visit is a visit to the Kunsthal in Rotterdam, where it is possible to see a retrospective exhibition of their works until May 8: “You get a very nice look behind the scenes; about how such an animated film is made e.g. But we also bring something new: a video card experience. A story takes place around you, and as a visitor you are right in the middle of it. The image is projected around you and you are a part of it. It really is a very special feeling just to sit in the main character’s living room. You can only experience this if you experience it yourself. ”
