walk among modern art and vines

At Château La Coste, north of Aix-en-Provence, you combine a top-quality rosé with famous works of art. This summer you can admire 24 paintings of Bob Dylan and a permanent artwork of this versatile musician.

As soon as you arrive at the Château La Coste domain, you will see a giant spider in the pond. A beautiful work of art by Louise Bourgeois. This is promising! We can park the car out of sight under the pond. So! Nothing more can disturb your senses in this beautiful place. You enter a low V-shaped building, built of concrete. The strict and clean lines, which seem to be inspired by the Japanese tatami (floor mat), play with the Provencal light.

Beautiful walking route across the domain

With the map in our pocket, we start our cultural tour of the domain. We wear good walking shoes and have a bottle of water with us, because here it seems that you can easily walk around for 2 hours. Although you can also take a shortcut if you want. The long route goes along and through the vineyards, where you learn more about the different grape varieties.

We walk through the forest. Up the hill, down the hill and enjoy the view and the works of art that blend beautifully into the landscape. The semi-cylindrical cave (wine cellar), a design by French architect Jean Nouvel, sparkles in the sun.

Artworks from Calder to Michel Stipe (REM)

The Japanese architect Tadao Ando is also well represented here. He designed the entrance, the art center and the chapel of La Coste. He also designed a building that tells visitors about our environment. Very colorful in the landscape are works by Alexander Calder, Liam Gillick, Jean-Michel Othoniel. Sometimes it takes a while to find: ‘The foxes’ by Michael Stipe (singer from REM) is hidden under the trees.

Wine tasting in the shade

At the end of the route, we arrive at a Provencal square where the café La Coste and the tasting rooms are located. In the shade you can enjoy the food and the domain’s organic wine. Let’s take a look at all the impressions and maybe we’ll spot another celebrity because they seem to be coming here.. Anyway, who we came across was Caramel, the guard cat from Château La Coste!

Bob Dylan exhibition summer 2022

This summer, the versatile Château La Coste is also hosting a Bob Dylan exhibition. The singer based his paintings on drawings he made during his tours through Europe and America between 1989 and 1991. The style of his paintings is influenced by Monet, Matisse and Chagall, among others. You can compare the similarities between Dylan’s paintings and these 20th century masters for yourself: there are also some original works of art by these painters.

Bob Dylan’s 24 masterpieces can be admired until September 30, 2022. This and the other exhibitions on the domain are open daily from 12:00 to 17:00. The sculpture of Dylan (photo above) will remain on the grounds of Château La Coste indefinitely.

Other practical matters: for the Art & Architecture Walk, the domain is open daily from 10:00 to 19:00 from March to October and from Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 17:00 in the winter months. Walk + museum visit: €15. Tour of the modern cave Jean Nouvel + wine tasting, €12: daily in French at 11.00 and 15.00, daily in English at 1 p.m. Reservation is recommended.
