Summer excursions in Friesland for the coming week: five tips

Children’s afternoon in De Alde Feanen, Horse Days in Driezum-Wâlterswâld, children’s activities in Museum Joure, a tour of the tropical greenhouse or shopping in authentic shops. This week we have again listed five tips.

Do you want to become Freek Vonk from De Alde Feanen?

Attention mothers and fathers of young adventurers! It Fryske Gea arranges for children from 8 years of age Friday a youth afternoon where the senses are sharp and nature is alive. Guaranteed natural fun in De Alde Feanen National Park!

What does this afternoon look like? You start with the ‘water animals’ section. Learn to look at what lives under water, super fun and educational! Then a supervisor from the survival track is ready to take the crossing to the survival island. Here you can swing and balance on the rope course. Will you manage to get dry over the 12-metre-wide ditch? We’ll see. Fortunately, participating is more important than winning, so bring extra clothes just in case. Interested? Register at the latest on Thursday afternoon by 3pm via This Friday doesn’t suit you? Don’t worry, you can drive again on August 5 and 12.

Horse days in Driezum-Wâlterswâld

Until Saturday you can visit Wâlterswâld The horse days visit. On Friday, 150 saddles plus hundreds of ponies and horses from home and abroad start participating in the Open Frisian Horse Marathon Championships. These animals trot, gallop and jump along and over obstacles in the villages of Driezum, Wâlterswâld and Damwâld.

Saturday, always the last Saturday in July, according to tradition, the Farmer’s Day is held in Wâlterswâld. The program for this day is very varied with many attractions for young and old.

Seeing through the eyes of an artist

The entire summer holiday is in the Museum Joure every day ZomerMaakfabrieken done. This is a hands-on program for children aged 6 to 14 with the theme ‘Looking through an artist’s eye’. The program consists of various short DIY activities, in the museum buildings and out in the garden and along the quayside. Also nice in good weather.

During the ZomerMaakfabriek you will be challenged to see through the eyes of an artist. What does it mean? See with all your senses. With emotion and reason at the same time. Or look at the world from a completely different dimension. You allow yourself to be amazed and inspired with your artist’s eye and of course you can also get to work yourself, in the museum or outside in the museum garden. Very realistic or abstract, with metal and paper or with leaves and plastic. You can put your own spin on it.

If you want to attend De ZomerMaakfabriek, book online tickets for the museum. You do not need to buy a separate ticket for De Maakfabriek (a normal children’s ticket is sufficient) and you do not have to pay a supplement. Remember that children can only visit the museum accompanied by an adult.

Take a look in a tropical greenhouse

Sunday will be one guided tour through the tropical greenhouse in Beetsterzwaag. This can be found on the grounds of Lycklamahûs. You will be taken into the tour guide’s stories, she will take you into the history of this complex that was owned by the noble family Lycklama à Nijeholt.

This family invariably took plants back with them on their travels to distant warm lands. Plants that needed a special home to survive in the cold Friesland. A tropical greenhouse was built. There has previously been a gardener employed in the family. Now the plants are looked after by several volunteers. The trip starts at 13:00.

Enjoy shopping in authentic stores

The North Frisian Winkeltjesroute includes the most special shops in the region. These are studios, brocante and gift shops with a cozy atmosphere, where you also get personal assistance. Forget the big city chain stores. Go out on Saturday by car or by bike (60 km) and go exploring the North Frisian shopping route.

You can get a pocket-sized route map in the participating stores. You will find a stamp card on the back of the route map. You get a stamp in each participating store and when the stamp card is full, you can hand it in at one of the participating stores and you get a small gift. The route map can also be downloaded from the site The shops are open on Saturdays from 10.00 to 17.00.
