‘Food professionals look forward to SIAL Paris’

Sial in Paris is always well visited by Dutch companies and professionals

Fairs – From 15 to 19 October there is another SIAL, in the French capital Paris. The 2020 edition was canceled due to the coronavirus outbreak. Preparations for the 2022 edition are now in full swing. SIAL event director Audrey Ashworth is confident of the success of the show and knows that international visitors and suppliers will want to meet again.

SIAL is held against the backdrop of a number of uncertainties. COVID is far from gone everywhere and some countries even have travel restrictions. The situation surrounding the virus in Europe in the autumn is also an uncertain factor. If there is no outbreak, it will be much easier for many countries, but also for a number of Asian countries, to travel to the French capital. Especially when these countries themselves get the virus under control. But the war in Ukraine also creates restrictions, especially for the arrival of Russian exhibitors, traditionally also a large group at the fair.

Physical scholarship

“However, there is a lot of interest in the upcoming edition of SIAL,” Ashworth said. “We have been looking forward to a new SIAL for four years. People also feel that there is a need for a physical fair. You get to know people, and that makes doing business easier. Personal contact remains important. You don’t really do business digitally.”

The digital alternatives that were devised during the corona period – also by SIAL – do not make it possible to feel, smell and taste the products online. And of course that’s what a food fair is all about,” says Ashworth. “Enjoying food is still important. This applies to consumers, but also to food professionals.”

Dutch participation

According to Ashworth, there will be extra interest from the Netherlands this year: “There will be no fewer than 140 Dutch companies, of which 25% will be new exhibitors. At least that’s how things are now. But some companies have not yet made up their minds. After France, Italy and Spain, the Netherlands is the largest country in terms of exhibitors during the upcoming SIAL. We also see that a relatively large number of innovations are submitted from the Netherlands.”

Challenges

In addition to the 7,200 exhibitors from 120 countries, who are expected to display around 400,000 products on 250,000 m2 of the exhibition floor, SIAL will once again this year offer a comprehensive content program where trends and developments are at the center. “More than ever before, the challenges facing the global food sector will also receive attention. Think of climate change, but also of the impact of conflict on the availability of food for an ever-growing world population. That’s why ‘Own the change’ is the theme of this SIAL.”
