Answer: ‘Ineos emphasizes the sustainability benefits of Project One’

Today, a small protest action by farmers took place near the site where INEOS will realize ‘Project One’ in Lillo. After this action, INEOS explained the themes raised by the activists.

‘Sustainability requires a lot of effort’

“INEOS understands the difficult situation and the great challenge facing Flemish agriculture,” a spokeswoman said Nathalie Meert.

“INEOS respects the farmers’ action to voice their concerns, but believes their action is not the right place to be.

As a society, we face major environmental challenges, and it is up to both industry and agriculture to work with solutions for the future.

With Project One, INEOS has set the bar particularly high. A radical effort was made to increase sustainability through innovation. INEOS’ ethane cracker produces ethylene with the lowest carbon footprint in Europe, three times lower than the average European cracker and aims to become CO2 neutral with the cracker within 10 years of start-up.

Project ONE consistently uses the best available techniques for minimal impact and provides extensive compensation to nature. Where possible, the project even exceeds legal standards.

The maximum effort and explicit ambition to make the sector more sustainable was recognized by the Flemish government, which after a thorough investigation gave Project One a permit.’

Focus on nitrogen

‘Nitrogen has recently become an important topic on the public agenda. Even before this public awareness, limiting the NOx impact was already an absolute priority for INEOS.

By focusing on innovation and using a combination of the best available techniques, NOx (nitrogen oxides) and also NH3 (ammonia) are reduced to an absolute minimum. INEOS therefore regrets that the activists are targeting Project One.

INEOS points out that not only the emissions, but also and above all the precipitation of NOx is important. Project One scores very well in this regard. The scientific conclusions of the environmental impact assessment are that there are no significant consequences for natural areas.

INEOS also points to the location of Project One: in an existing industrial area, as an excellent example of ‘incorporation’ and optimal use of space.’

About Project ONE

‘Project ONE is an investment by INEOS Olefins Belgium in Antwerp’s chemical sector for the construction of an ethane cracker. The investment amounts to more than three billion euros, making it the largest investment in European chemistry in more than 20 years.

The state-of-the-art facility will produce ethylene, one of the world’s most widely used basic chemicals and an essential building block for a range of products that can be found in medical applications, textiles, computer and smartphone housings, household appliances, food preservation packaging and cosmetics.

It is also used in lightweight parts for cars and wind turbines, insulation material for the construction sector or pipes for transporting drinking water.

Project ONE will raise the standard of the chemical industry in Europe by using the best available techniques. In particular, the investment will break new ground in energy efficiency and have a carbon footprint less than half that of the top 10% of steam crackers in Europe.

2026 is the start year for operations, as construction will take approximately 4 years. The investment in Lillo will create 450 direct jobs and thousands of indirect jobs.’ Photo Ineos – Fluxys.
