Eight luxury computers for the connoisseur compared | Desktop systems

For high work productivity, you need a lot of computing power and a large screen. Image editors, web designers, gamers and multimedia enthusiasts, among others, benefit greatly from a luxury machine. We introduce you to some of these expensive computers. Do you have the money for it?

If you are willing to invest heavily in a new computer, you can take a look at a luxury PC or laptop. If you’re looking for a copy with excellent computing capabilities, you’ll quickly end up with a system designed for gamers. While we certainly discuss a few in this overview, not everyone is waiting for a hip design with striking lighting and a high-end graphics card.

Fortunately, there are also products on the market that focus on working effectively without users having to deal with all kinds of extra frills. Such systems have an elegant appearance and excellent specifications to win over creative professionals. In addition to the traditional laptop and desktop form factor, a number of computer manufacturers are experimenting with different cases. The mentioned products from Microsoft, HP and ASUS are clear examples of this.

Although the computers in this article differ somewhat in appearance, there is also a common factor: All systems have an Intel Core i7 or i9 processor, so you can work with the machine without any problems. Additionally, most include a discrete video card to boost graphics performance.

For creative minds, Microsoft Surface Studio 2 is an interesting tool. It is an all-in-one system with a 28-inch touchscreen that you can use as a digital drawing board via a folding mechanism. To determine the angle of inclination, the back of the screen contains a robust hinge. The resolution is 4500 × 3000 pixels, which means that the screen has a relatively high pixel density of 192 ppi.

If desired, users can connect two additional 4K displays via USB-C. The modest system cabinet is hidden in the base. For that reason, Microsoft chose a CPU that we mainly encounter in laptops. The Intel Core i7-7820HQ has a maximum turbo frequency of 3.9 GHz and contains four computer cores. The other specifications depend on the chosen configuration, because Surface Studio 2 is available in different versions. The ‘cheapest’ version includes a 1 TB SSD, the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 graphics card with 6 GB of GDDR5 memory and 16 GB of DDR4 RAM.

In terms of connectivity, there are, among other things, four USB3.0 ports, a card reader and bluetooth4.1 adapter. Unlike many other Surface systems, the manufacturer provides additional accessories, namely keyboard, mouse and stylus. You can conveniently attach this stylus to the side of the screen via a magnetic system.

With the Omen X series, HP is targeting gamers, and it’s clearly visible in the futuristic look of this 900-250. It is a steel cube that you can place at an angle thanks to the existing foot. The front has red LED lines and the HP Omen logo. The top is transparent on one side, while the other side accommodates four 3.5-inch drives and various connections for peripherals. There are even more connection ports on the back.

Under the hood, the (overclockable) Intel Core i9-7920X calculates. For this, the chipset uses twelve computer cores with a maximum clock frequency of 4.3 GHz in turbo mode. RAM consists of 32 GB DDR4 RAM. As you would expect from a gaming PC, a discreet video card is built into the house, namely the renowned Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Ti with 11 GB of gddr6 memory.

Two 3 TB disks with a rotation speed of 7200 rpm are already built in for data storage. To load Windows 10 Home smoothly, the system also includes a 1 TB m.2 SSD. HP paid extra attention to cooling with this striking machine. For example, the system cabinet has liquid cooling and diagonally positioned fans at the top.

MSI has been developing affordable gaming PCs for years, and the widely available MSI Aegis line is a prime example of this. The design looks somewhat unorthodox because the system cabinet is angled on the base. The front of this stand includes an HDMI port so users can easily connect an additional monitor. In addition to three USB ports and two 3.5 mm mini jacks on the front, you will find the remaining connections on the back.

MSI Aegis 3 is available in different versions. At the time of writing, the 8RC-058EU is the most comprehensive version that you can find at various (web)shops. This system has a price tag of around fifteen hundred euros, but you get reasonable specifications in return. For example, this machine has an Intel Core i7-8700 with six computer cores and a maximum clock frequency of 4.6 GHz. The working memory consists of 16 GB DDR4 RAM, while a nice video card with Nvidia GTX 1060 is built in.

For data storage, the 8RC-058EU includes a 3.5-inch 2 TB hard drive and 256 GB m.2 SSD. The optical drive is also an excellent addition, especially for a gaming PC. The computer is equipped with a pre-installed version of Windows 10 Home.

Under the product name Envy Curved 34-b150nd, HP developed an all-in-one system with a 34-inch curved screen of 3440 x 1440 pixels. The tilting monitor and the flat system cabinet are only connected via a thin neck. This makes this machine a striking look. Despite the flat housing, all common connections are available.

An HDMI 2.0 output is available for connecting an additional monitor. An interesting side effect is that HP has equipped the front with four active sound drivers from the Danish brand Bang & Olufsen. As a result, this system more or less fulfills the role of sound bar. A touch panel on top allows users to adjust volume and skip tracks. The compact dimensions of the system case did not prevent HP from integrating a full-fledged desktop processor.

The Intel Core i7-8700T contains six computer cores running at a nominal clock speed of 2.4 GHz. If necessary, a clock frequency of 4 GHz can be achieved in turbo mode. Furthermore, this stylish system has 16 GB of DDR4 RAM and a 3.5-inch 1 TB drive. A 512 GB m.2 SSD is also integrated for faster disk sliding capability. Finally, the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 with 4 GB of gddr5 memory takes care of the video performance.

Due to its cylindrical design, the ProArt PA90 M9069ZN does not look very much like a full-fledged computer. Still, there’s quite a bit of computing power in this mini PC. For example, the Intel Core i9-9900K is at the helm of this system. Eight computing cores run at a nominal clock speed of 3.6 GHz, while the CPU may shift a gear to 5 GHz.

ASUS has found an original way to keep the machine cool. If the processor gets hotter than eighty degrees, the top will slide up a little. In addition, the manufacturer has chosen water cooling. For the video performance, the Nvidia Quadro P4000 with 8 gddr5 memory is integrated, so that gamers and graphic designers can use this system, e.g. The working memory consists of 16 GB DDR4 RAM, which can be expanded up to 64 GB. A 256 GB SSD holds a pre-installed version of Windows 10 Pro.

The second storage drive is a 2.5-inch 1TB drive with a rotation speed of 7200 rpm. Compared to a traditional PC, fewer connections are available. Users can connect peripherals via four USB3.1 ports, while an equal number of DisplayPort connections are available for controlling multiple displays.

Taiwanese company Getac specializes in developing portable computers that can take a beating. For example, the X500 is resistant to drops and liquid spills. The design resembles a narrow suitcase including the included handle. The robust housing results in a high weight of over five kilos. A fingerprint scanner is integrated for extra digital security.

Inside the armored case is an Intel Core i7-7820HQ processor clocked at 2.9 GHz. The four computer cores achieve a maximum clock frequency of 3.9 GHz in turbo mode. As standard, there is 16 GB of DDR4 memory, which can be expanded up to 64 GB. For video performance, this X500 relies on Intel’s integrated video chip. Furthermore, a 512 GB SSD and an optical drive are built in. The Full HD screen has a size of 15.6 inches.

This Windows Pro machine includes four USB3.0 ports, Ethernet, HDMI and VGA. Getac is developing several versions of the X500, but not all variants are equally available in the low countries. The X500 G3 XJ6STSCBBDXL mentioned here is for sale at a selected number of webshops. Consider a high purchase price.

Lenovo develops hybrid notebooks with a full HD screen of 13.3 inches under the series name ThinkPad X380 Yoga. You can therefore easily take it with you, so you always have a tablet and laptop at your disposal on the spot, thanks to the 360-degree hinge. According to the manufacturer, the battery lasts more than thirteen hours. The housing also has a fingerprint sensor and RPM chip on board so you can securely store data.

The Chinese brand regularly releases new editions within the ThinkPad X380 Yoga series. Currently, the newly released 20LH002CMH is widely available. For this model, Lenovo chose the widely used Intel Core i7-8550U. This energy-efficient quad-core processor, which Intel developed specifically for mobile devices, runs at a nominal clock speed of 1.8 GHz. If necessary, outliers to 4 GHz are possible.

Logically, there is no room for a discrete graphics card, so the system uses Intel’s integrated UHD Graphics 620 video chip. The working memory consists of 16 GB DDR4 RAM and for storage there is a m.2 SSD of 512 GB. As an operating system, the machine contains Windows 10 Pro. It’s nice that the manufacturer provides a digital pen that you can easily charge.

With its Trident X series, MSI proves that you don’t necessarily need a large system cabinet to accommodate a lot of system power. Plus the 9SF-057EU measures 38.3 × 13 × 39.6 centimeters, so it’s not too bad in desktop terms. Due to the available RGB lighting, the playful house immediately catches the eye. MSI also provides a transparent cover plate so you can take a look inside.

The Intel Core i9-9900K is the beating heart of the machine with eight computer cores with a clock speed of 3.6 GHz. The maximum clock frequency in turbo mode is 5 GHz. MSI also added 16GB of DDR4 memory and a 512GB m.2 SSD to this model. As a secondary storage drive, the machine contains a 2.5 inch 2 TB disk with a rotational speed of 7200 rpm.

The available video card is partly responsible for the hefty purchase price, because the Plus 9SF-057EU has the famous Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Ti on board. The video memory consists of 11 GB gddr6. Players can connect one or more monitors via display port and/or hdmi. There is no shortage of connection options for peripheral equipment, because the house has a total of nine different USB ports.
