This area, which is on the border between Groningen, Friesland and Drenthe, has a rich cultural history that has a lot to tell. Medicine from magical to medical

In the exhibition In the rag basket in De Karstenhoeve in Ruinerwold expands beyond hygiene and quackery was aware of earlier pandemics such as the Spanish flu and cholera. The death rate was huge compared to corona now. The general health service consisted of the village doctor, the district nurse and the midwife.

Popular belief used to play a large role; for example, it was believed that a cross on the churn could ward off the devil and a chestnut in the pocket would help against rheumatism. So Kwakzalver did a good business. The exhibition can be seen until 30 September.

Missing Jewish artwork returns

A missing piece of Jewish art will be moved on Wednesday in Groningse Folkingestraat. During the meeting, Mayor Schuiling, Allie van Altena and Willem Lammers share their thoughts on the artwork. Singer-songwriter George M. Welling plays some songs. Five works of art were unveiled in public space in 1997 in memory of the Jewish residents of Folkingestraat. The five works come together Imagine the past named.

One of these works of art was realized by Allie van Altena and consists of three photos, one of which has been lost after a renovation. The date of the new revelation is not accidental; the picture was taken on 31 August: then Queen’s Day, Queen Wilhelmina’s birthday. You can register by sending an e-mail to reserve@synagogegroningen.nl stating ‘Imagine past’.

The air watch tower was part of a semi-secret network of 276 lookouts built across the country between 1951 and 1956. You can sign up for the excursion via groningerlandschap.nl.

A beard, guitar and broken heart

Timothy Showalter wanted to be a professional basketball player when he was younger. His life took a different turn when he was diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. He threw himself into music and became the man behind the band Strand of Oaks. The musician is now best known as the singer-songwriter with a beard, a guitar and a broken heart. In terms of genre, his music can be placed somewhere between indie, Americana, rock and folk. Each song is based on traditional singer-songwriter music. Last October Strand of Oaks released the album In heaven which fans have been looking forward to for a while. On his previous record, Showalter collaborated with, among others, Jason Isbell and members of My Morning Jacket. For this album he collaborated with James Iha of The Smashing Pumpkins.

On Thursday, Strand of Oaks will be on stage in Oosterpoort in the Kleine Zaal, as part of TakeRoot Presents. Support is provided by American singer-songwriter Jenny O. from Los Angeles. Her music has been featured in series such as Orange is the new black and grey’s Anatomy .
