Today’s world requires better and more sustainable solutions to meet the current climate challenges. The agricultural sector is no exception, as the way we produce food affects nature, biodiversity and the environment. And more food must be produced to feed the additional 2 billion people the world will have by 2050.
IoT specialist EVALAN strives to be part of the necessary change. As such, EVALAN actively participates in the European project PLANtAR, which aims to reduce the environmental impact of food production and lower the costs of innovative technologies to help address food safety. How? By creating a new generation of digital technologies.
The use of green and digital technology, including the Internet of Things (IoT), is essential to solve the apparent paradox of production increase and environmental protection. The more data growers have, the better they can create the right conditions for cultivation.
Smart sensors can monitor key parameters to optimize crop development and health, leading to higher yields and better harvests. Important parameters include moisture, conductivity, leaf wetness or soil nutrition. In addition, the use of inexpensive sensors allows producers to monitor conditions accurately and at the unit level, leading to higher yields and more sustainable practices (e.g. reduced water and resource wastage and no or minimal use of potentially polluting components such as pesticides) . Smart sensors can also detect plant stress or disease at an early stage and alert growers to take action.
Within the European project, EVALAN collaborates with “Application Intelligence” by providing sensor nodes and gateways that enable data from the sensors to be sent to the cloud continuously and in real time.
EVALAN’s turnkey solution BACE (Build A Connection Everywhere) integrates the sensors with its wireless sensor network technology. BACE communicates via many standard protocols and uses one of them to retrieve the data from the sensors and deliver it to the cloud via a secure API (Application Programming Interface). The solution is cost-effective, secure and future-proof, and implementation is fast.
