8 things to do in New West

This month you can enjoy film and art festivals, concerts, sand sculptures, exhibitions and much more. In different places and at different times. Activities for young and old and something for everyone. And all with free access.

There are so many fun activities this month. It is all made possible through the cooperation between various social initiatives and neighboring parties, the various cultural partners, (municipal) funds for art and culture and the district. We list it for you.

West Beach (Film) Festival

No less than 11 days filled with films, music and fun at Sloterplas. The theme this year is freedom. See the programme.

  • Where: Bastion next to Sloterstrand.

Westland Canal Concert

Moor your boat on the water or come and listen on one of the banks. There is also a stage with seating and picnic tables. Enjoy musical performances by Landau, Kooi, Ischico Velzel and the Louis Swing Orchestra, among others.

Sloterplas art festival

Relax all afternoon and evening watching and listening to music and theater performances in a unique location. Or by participating in one of the workshops. Sloterplas Art Festival is a festival about art and culture in Nieuw-West. An important part of the festival is the presentation of the New WeSter cultural award. There are various (children’s) workshops, dance and music performances, theater performances and an outdoor photo exhibition ‘Samen Slotervaart’. The festival is held together with Buurtwerkplaats Noorderhof at their beautiful location.

Gardens of the West Fest

The late summer festival for neighbours, farmers and other outdoor enthusiasts takes place at the Polderheuvel venue in Tuinen van West. All afternoon there is delicious and honest food and drink from local growers, bakers and chefs. There are stalls selling the harvest from the Gardens of the West and a car boot market. There are puppet shows, circus workshops, theatre, craft workshops with artists, sports and games and a neighborhood market. All day long there are bands and artists who fill the garden with varied music. The program can be found at tuinvanwest.info.

The Slotermeer fair on the square ’40-’45

You are welcome at Jaarmarkt Slotermeer on Plein ’40-’45. Here you can stroll along the 200 stalls. There is live music, a food terrace, workshops and sports and games activities for all ages.

  • When: Sunday, September 18 from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Where: Square ’40-’45.

Full Sky Festival

Volle Lucht transforms Gerbrandy Park into an open-air stage for local talent. This new three-day festival offers a stage for local musicians and spoken word artists. Between fairy-lit trees, local chefs prepare special dishes, while the air is filled with music, spoken word and beautiful stories around the central theme of ‘freedom’. See the programme.

  • Where: Gerbrandy Park.

Amsterdam Sand Sculpture Festival

For this special festival, New West residents could submit stories from the Oeverland. These stories were transformed into large sand sculptures, made by 5 sand artists who are among the best in the world.

  • When: Saturday 24 September to Sunday 23 October.

Cultural festival

Get to know the different cultures of the Geuzenveld. There is bingo, foreign snacks and drinks, a quiz and a foreign music party. You must register via jaanzi@dock.nl.
