Jazz poetry by Kika Sprangers and ensemble
With her velvety sound, sonic language and compelling compositions, saxophonist Kika Sprangers in her game with full surrender vulnerability and strength. She has a preference for unorthodox instrumentation and tensions from symphonic full passages to charged silences. Her artistic quest revolves around what makes people human; her debut album Human characteristics of her ensemble expresses this in the combination of portrait photography and music. The album was nominated in 2020 for the Edison Jazz/World Audience Award and the Edison Jazz National. This year Sprangers was also named one of the 101 promising artists in the Netherlands and Belgium by the NRC.
In her own quintet, she lets Anna Serierse’s textless singing voice flow into her own saxophone sound. Alessandro Fongaro (bass), Willem Romers (drums) and Koen Schalkwijk (piano and wurlitzer) make up the rhythm section. Together, they are outspoken musical characters who flourish in teamwork, unexpected decisions and a place where song and saxophone can embrace each other. In this jazz poetry you can hear influences from artists like Kenny Wheeler & Norma Winstone and Jakob Bro.
