Samsung Galaxy Book multi-folding laptop

Samsung is developing a laptop with a flexible screen that you can close and then fold, making the device extra portable.

Samsung is the market leader in foldables. The Galaxy Z series smartphones also sell very well in the Netherlands. The latest models have sold no less than 5.6x as well as their predecessors – the company announced this via a press release last week. In the background, the company continuously develops new electronics with flexible screens.

Think, for example, of a Galaxy Tab foldable tablet, but the ambitions go further than that. This time, Samsung Electronics has patented a very unique laptop – which is foldable and foldable. It’s a kind of future Galaxy Book.

On July 2, 2021, Samsung Electronics filed a patent with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) for a ‘Multi-foldable electronic device’. The 47-page document was approved and released on January 13, 2022.

The documentation describes a Samsung laptop with a flexible screen and a physical keyboard. The flexible screen does not fold lengthwise – as is the case with the Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Fold and the Asus Zenbook 17 Fold, which were demonstrated at CES 2022. Instead, Samsung has chosen a screen that folds widthwise – like a book.

Two hinges are built in, similar to a modern laptop computer. This way you can close the laptop normally. You can then also fold the device. The left part (1 display part and 1 keyboard part) can be folded over the right part. The device also offers support for the S Pen.

Samsung supplies this laptop with two batteries, one integrated in the left part and one in the right part – which the company also uses with the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 foldable smartphones.

Samsung has also added a handy clip with a hook to ensure that the device cannot be unfolded accidentally. To counteract this, various magnets are also built in. Also special, when folded, users have access to audio player functions – there are three buttons on the side for rewind, fast forward and pause.

It’s a very ingenious invention, clearly different from anything we’ve seen in foldable laptops to date. Until now, we have primarily seen laptops with a flexible screen, where the other screen part is used for operation – display of virtual keyboard etc.

This time, however, the flexible screen has a completely different function, namely to make the device extra compact when you have it with you. In addition, an extra large/wide display can be used in this way, so that the user can work even more productively.

Whether or not Samsung actually intends to release such a multi-foldable laptop in the long run remains to be seen. The device would fit in nicely with the Galaxy Book series, which houses the company’s 2-in-1 laptops. Unfortunately, the Samsung Galaxy Book devices are not available in the Netherlands, this may change in the future.

It’s clear that many more flexible display devices are on the way. The South Korean manufacturer is expected to present its first retractable smartphone with a roll-up display this year. In addition, Samsung is developing a double-folding smartphone with two hinges – both prototypes were also present at CES 2022.

Last November, Samsung Display also showed a whole series of new Flex OLED screens for future foldable smartphones, tablets and TVs. In that regard, there are still plenty of innovations in the pipeline.
