Queen of Soul Shirma Rouse

Shirma Rouse can simply be called the Dutch queen of soul. As a finalist at Holland’s voice in 2013 she won many hearts. After a blind audition, where all the judges were reversed, she got Trijntje Oosterhuis as coach. She made it to the semi-finals of the program. In addition to her performance at The voice she was a background singer with Anouk in the Eurovision Song Contest, in which she played Maria The passion she sang on The Ladies of Soul and can be seen on the TV show Amazing Grace .

She has toured with her in the past Aretha Franklin Tribute along the theatres, now she comes to De Koornbeurs in Franeker with her show Hope and love . In her new performance, Rouse sings her own songs and covers of, among others, Franklin, her great idol. Together with her band, this power woman deserves more than her honorary title a warm and intimate evening filled with swinging music, dazzling singing and short stories.

The rolling seasons and a happy Thanksgiving

The cantatas are premiered in Menaam The rolling seasons and A happy Thanksgiving by Caleb Simper, in a Dutch adaptation by Sebastiaan Schippers. The cantatas are based on texts from the hymns and offer great variation between choral singing and solo singing, also in duets and quartets. Pniëls Kerkkoor from Leeuwarden-Huizum, Nocht & Wille from Lollum and Kleine Cantorij from Burgum come together for these performances, which are conducted by Schippers.

Soloists are Vronie de Vreeze (soprano), Henney Venema (alto), Roelof Veldhuizen (tenor) and Hans de Wolf (bass). The organ accompaniment is in the hands of Mattijs de Vreugd. Tickets are available in advance through members and in the church on the evening itself.

Ferdinand de Jong and Gurbe Douwstra

Being in Fryske Boekenwike Ferdinand de Jong and Gurbe Douwstra as guests at Fryske evening. De Jong will talk about his work on Thursday evening. He started writing in 2010 and has eight books to his credit. Suspense and adventure are the common thread in his novels. His latest book Museum yard was released last December. De Jong also wrote this year’s Fryske Gavebog.

The Frisian troubadour Gurbe Douwstra provides the musical accompaniment. His repertoire varies from sensitive listening songs to humorous sing-alongs. He has released three solo albums and two albums with other Frisian troubadours. For this occasion he will perform some new songs. De Jong and Douwstra also appear in Drachten (today) and in Balk (Sunday).

The many sounds of Ben Reel

Since his debut album This is the movie since 1999, Ben Reel has constantly re-evolved his musical style. Whether it’s folk, soul, reggae, rock or jazz, Reel doesn’t hesitate to bring different sounds together. With a solo career of at least twenty years behind him, Ben Reel has more than enough success.

In recent years he has toured Ireland, Great Britain, Europe and the USA, performed at the famous Bluebird cafe in Nashville and at festivals such as Jamming@Hippie Jacks, Musiktan festival in Bilbao, Haarlem Jazz & Huntenpop, Robin Hood folk festival, Kilkenny rhythm & roots, Cork jazz & Electric Picnic. He will be on the podium in Sneek on Thursday.

Open studio at Gerrit Wijngaarden | Advertising

In 1980, the Frisian painter Gerrit Wijngaarden had his first experience with oil painting. His brother painted milk curds in his spare time and offered them for sale on the jetty at their parents’ home on Trekvaart near Dedgum. He became passionate and by visiting exhibitions and consulting literature he taught himself to paint. At first mainly still life, later portraits and trompe-l’oeil were added.

Since 2000, Wijngaarden has also focused on the landscape, inspired by, among others, Leon Spilliaert. On the weekends on the 5th, 6th and 12.13. November you can admire more than forty works in a realistic style under the open studio, mainly landscapes and still lifes. There is also work by his wife Grietje Huisman. She paints with watercolor and oil paint. Gerrit Wijngaarden’s studio is located at Waltaweg 25 in Tjerkwerd and is open during the open study days from 1.30pm to 5.30pm.
