When people and history meet

What does it mean to grow up as a first-generation Somali in the Netherlands? What happens when people with a common history meet? Choreographer Mohamed Yusuf Boss unravels in his multimedia dance performance LIX it fragmented itself (it broke itself). Based on the belief that your story is not something that lies behind you, but something that is stored within you, he explores his bi-cultural background. Mohamed returns to the Somali community where he grew up. There he talks to the older and younger generations and to his mother, who is the bridge to the family left behind in Somalia.

Meeting each other again provides the material to make the performance. In a dance performance that combines hip-hop and the traditional Somali dance Djandheer, Mohamed expresses the desire to be a whole person. There where in KOW the question ‘how do you relate to your environment?’ was central and i AFAR ‘how do you relate to the other?’ it comes in LIX about the question ‘how do you relate to yourself?’. Of LIX X_YUSUF_BOSS pays tribute to the man who doesn’t always feel whole, but is actually whole.
