Job description
Whether it is an award ceremony, a presentation, an opening of the school year, a conversation with teachers or a stage interview about cultural policy: As a speechwriter, you translate ideas, management and politics into words that touch. You write speeches and other catchy texts for the minister and/or the state secretary in the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science in The Hague.

The Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (OCW) is working towards a smart, skilled and creative Netherlands. We are looking for a speech writer for the Spokesman speeches and public performances team.

The Communications Directorate advises the Ministers of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, high-ranking officials and political officials on the development of (communicative) policy. We are there for the press and the public, for politicians and organisations.

In addition to speeches, you write forewords, columns and prepare for interviews. You also seamlessly translate a speech into powerful online content. You easily put yourself in the shoes of the minister/secretary of state you write for, and you have a strong eye for the underlying values ​​in their policy. You can just as easily put yourself in the audience’s shoes and assume the role of a relative outsider. You also understand the point of view of the political staff and are happy to talk to them about their case.

You write about all topics that affect the ministry, such as education, science, media, culture and liberation. You work in a team of three voice recorders. You share the work together and continuously discuss the quality, the choices you make and the effectiveness of speeches. In addition, you will join the team of one of the ministers or the secretary of state. In this way, you help with the preparation of performances. You do this together with spokespersons and advisers on public appearances, the minister’s/state secretary’s secretariat, colleagues from political departments and organizers of events.

Job requirements
• you have an academic degree, at least three years of work experience and preferably experience as a speech writer;
• you have a golden pen, preferably also in English, and come up with stories and ideas easily;
• you have a great political and broad societal interest and preferably experience with the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science’s subjects. This is not a must, as a good speech writer can handle many substantive themes;
• you are a solid advisor and discussion partner;
• you are a communicator and have an open personality;
• you understand the work of your colleagues in our department, want to work interdisciplinary and like to think together with colleagues;
• you like teamwork, but are not afraid of the final responsibility for a speech;
• you are flexible, creative and manage easily under (time) pressure.

Finally and at least as important: You are a colleague who is pleasant to work with, because the Communications Department at OCW puts job satisfaction first.

Terms of employment
Salary level: scale 12
Salary description: Depending on knowledge and experience, a starting scale may be possible.
Monthly salary: Min. €4,092 – Max. €6,045 (gross)
Employment: Fixed-term employment contract with a view to indefinite employment
Contract duration: 1 year
Minimum number of hours per week: 32
Maximum number of hours per week: 36

Other employment conditions
In addition to the salary, you will receive an individual election budget (IKB). SCV consists of money (16.37% of your gross annual salary) and time. With the IKB, you make the choices that suit you, and you can put together some of your terms of employment yourself.
